Private Research and Development Institutions
Four nationally prominent private, non-profit research institutes have established significant centers in Virginia in recent years: SRI’s Center for Advanced Drug Research in the Shenandoah Valley, The National Institute of Aerospace in Hampton; The Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Loudoun County; and Carilion Biomedical Institute in Roanoke.

The National Institute of Aerospace: A strategic partner of NASA Langley Research Center and conducts leading-edge aerospace research and development through a consortium of research universities including Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Old Dominion University, William and Mary, Georgia Tech, University of Maryland and North Carolina State University.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Janelia Farm Research Campus: The Janelia Farm Research Campus houses a world-class research center where scientists from many disciplines gather to collaborate closely, in small teams, on some of science's most challenging problems. The Janelia Farm complex includes a large laboratory building, conference facilities, and housing, all designed to blend into the natural surroundings of the site. The planning for both the scientific program and the campus facilities was intertwined, with each part overlapping and influencing the other.

Carilion Biomedical Institute: Is dedicated to improving the health and lives of people worldwide by partnering with scientists, researchers, and the medical and business communities to create major advances in healthcare. CBI fosters biomedical research and brings the most promising projects to market through a rigorous medical, financial, operational and market due diligence and by connecting start-up companies to early stage venture capital, strategic real estate, management talent, manufacturing partners and healthcare customers.

SRI’s Center for Advanced Drug Research (CADRE): Located at SRI Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg, Virginia. CADRE will advance the state of the art to improve the productivity of the pharmaceutical industry, help our nation respond to biothreats, and develop life-saving treatments for neglected and orphan diseases.
The CADRE mission is the creation of new diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines for infectious and neglected diseases and for biodefense. The Center combines SRI's well-established expertise in drug discovery, computational biology, and preclinical development with a new proteomic laboratory to develop these solutions.
