Community Colleges

The Virginia Community College System, comprised of 23 community colleges, located on 40 campuses around the state, provides academic, occupational and technical training programs, many of which are designed specifically to meet the needs of nearby businesses and industries.

In the 2010-2011 academic year, Virginia's community colleges awarded over 21,000 degrees, diplomas and certificates. Increasingly, community colleges are developing transfer agreements with four-year institutions, whereby students earn the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at a community college. In 2010, the community colleges served over 6,400 employers and more than 254,000 individuals in open enrollment and customized workforce training and services, contributing substantially to the economic development of their service regions.
